It’s always exciting when a long-held vision becomes a reality, so Life Education Townsville had every reason to celebrate when they rolled out their new high-tech mobile learning centre after more than five years of tireless fundraising.
Through countless raffles and local events, Life Education Townsville committee raised an incredible $180,000 to fund and custom-modify the new van which replaces the previous mobile learning centre which was almost 30-years old and had clocked thousands of kilometres across the region.
Featuring bright new signage and our much-loved mascot Healthy Harold, the self-drive van is the first of its kind in the country.
“The new van is a credit to the committee’s hard work and vision,” said Life Education CEO Michael Fawsitt.
“It will help reduce costs because our educator Tim is able to drive the vehicle rather than rely on towing companies, which can be expensive when travelling large distances. It really is a great long-term investment which will enable the Life Education program to continue to serve the Townsville region for decades to come.”
The Life Education Townsville committee unveiled the new MLC at a launch event at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. Committee members were joined by students, supporters, Life Education CEO Michael Fawsitt and mascot Healthy Harold.
The new van will reach more than 50 primary schools and more than 12,000 children in the Townsville region annually.
“It’s taken many years, but thanks to both Queensland Health and Communities for Children providing funding for our actual program, the committee was able to redirect our fundraising efforts to the purchase and custom-design of the new van,” committee president Mark Purvis said.
“We’re also indebted to our local Lions, Quota and Rotary Clubs, the Commonwealth Bank, Brazier Motti which provided computer-aided designs to modify the van into a state-of-the art mobile classroom and the Cowboys Leagues Club which allowed us to hold regular raffles at the club.”
