You’ve got a friend in me – Evie stands tall after Life Ed session

When it comes to making friends and being a positive role model in her school community, eight-year-old Evie has all the right moves.

The Gladstone Year 3 student loved taking part in the Life Ed program at Gladstone’s Trinity College last term, learning all about respectful relationships and navigating difficult emotions.

Evie says:

“Being kind, respectful and listening to friends is important, and so is letting people play with you if they’re sad or don’t have any friends. Having differences is okay, but apologising is the right way to be friends again.”

Evie’s mum, Molly, says the session has had a positive influence on her daughter’s whole outlook.

“I’ve noticed she’s becoming more thoughtful about how her words and actions affect others.

Before the Life Ed session, Evie would often get extremely upset, avoid the conflict situation or wait for the other person to fix it.

Friendships are much more challenging at this age, and Evie found conflict quite hard to navigate. The school put in a lot of effort to try and teach the girls how to resolve their issues, but sometimes it can be difficult.

The Life Ed program has helped Evie and her peer group understand that disagreements don’t have to end a friendship. She’s learned that, instead of avoidance, talking things through, listening and apologising when she’s wrong can help solve problems.”

Molly says although kindness and empathy have always been encouraged at home, learning these important concepts alongside peers and a specialist educator reinforce the message.

“It makes me incredibly proud. Friendships are such an important part of growing up, and knowing she has the confidence and skills to work through disagreements gives me reassurance that she’ll build healthy relationships as she gets older.”

Molly and her mum were the lucky Term 2 winners of Harold’s Family Comp, winning a $1000 JB HiFi voucher.
