There was an excited buzz in the air at Saints Peter and Paul’s Catholic School, Bulimba last week when Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women Di Farmer arrived at the Brisbane school to see the Life Education Queensland program in action.
Ms Farmer, who is also the Member for Bulimba, was welcomed by Life Education Queensland CEO Michael Fawsitt as an official Life Education ambassador. After receiving a unique framed memento of children’s drawings, the minister joined eager Year 3 students in the Life Ed mobile learning classroom.
With educator Lisa at the helm, the children were captivated by All Systems Go, a learning module in which a futuristic machine ‘The Venture’ takes the class on a magnificent journey to uncover how the human body works.
The children learned how positive lifestyle choices help to maintain internal body systems – as well as identifying strategies to resist pressure from others and maintain personal safety.
Life Education mascot Healthy Harold received a huge and deafening welcome from the school’s younger year groups during morning tea break, while some lucky children had their photo taken with the popular giraffe.
Life Education Queensland CEO Michael Fawsitt thanked Saints Peter and Paul’s Catholic School for hosting the minister’s visit to the school and for helping to celebrate Life Education’s work with children. Mr Fawsitt also acknowledged the ongoing support of MPs from all sides of politics, as well as donors and community partners, all of whom enable Life Education to continue working with Queensland children across the state.
“It was fantastic to be able to show Minister Farmer how our program positively impacts on children to promote health and wellbeing. The minister was able to see firsthand how the children come out of our mobile learning classrooms equipped with important messages about how their bodies work, as well as key knowledge about effective behaviours to keep their bodies safe in the future,” Mr Fawsitt said.
Ms Farmer said Life Education’s program addresses important issues that not only help keep kids safe but empower them to thrive and achieve.
“The Life Education program is about much more than the harms of drugs, it’s also about health and healthy relationships,” she said.
“Supporting kids and families to be healthy, including mental and emotional health, is an important way to help strengthen families and communities.”
